PARENTS AS ACADEMIC CHAMPIONS

ANDELE has collected a great deal of evidence that confirms if parents of children with academic and behavioral challenges who are more involved as stakeholders in helping to chart the academic progress of their children, the greater the likelihood their children will make greater gains in school from tutoring and educational services. ANDELE and its collaborative partners believe that if parents, caregivers and children begin to work together at an early stage, children are less likely to become frustrated with challenging academic work, and less likely to become physically and emotional destructive. Evidence clearly indicates that parents can be academic advocates for their children, even if the parent/caregiver does not have a formal education. The earlier parents interact with their children by reading, counting, discussing current events, doing puzzles and playing educational games, the easier it will be for the parent and child to grow together as a truly effective and supportive “tutor-student” team. With seventy-five percent of New Mexico's schools failing under the current rating system, it is imperative that parents become more involved in supporting their children's learning goals.
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH STRATEGIES FOR YOUTH
ANDELE is dedicated to helping youth by directly addressing health issues and social factors that influence health. We believe that one of the most effective ways to have a positive impact on the overall health and well being of families is to give children the opportunities they need to succeed.

ANDELE provides a wide range of development opportunities for young people from pre kindergarten to college, to advance their education and prepare for careers in health. Our programs bring together community organizations to create educational and employment opportunities for young people. From developing basic literacy skills to enhance healthier lifestyles, we offer support, guidance, and mentoring for young people.

PARENT EMPOWERMENT
The Parent Empowerment Resources and Training Project (PERT) has been designed to empower under served parents to have greater skills and confidence to serve as better academic champions for their children, and thereby increase academic proficiency, reduce aggressive behavior and the need for clinical interventions in schools.

Today, clinicians, educators, social workers and government officials, as well as parents, are keenly aware that it is not enough simply to wish schools will automatically improve, or that parents must simply accept what comes their way. In reality, children need support, love, and consistent encouragement, and caregivers need access to training, educational resources, and inspirational speakers to help empower existing clients as well as under served families in our community.

ANDELE's team is an effective resource for helping parents to become their child's academic champion and best tutor! That is what Parent Empowerment is all about - we do it for the children!
